California is Fully Drought-Free for the First Instance in Two and a Half Decades.

Following 25 long years, every region of California is facing dryness. This milestone arrives after difficult years marked by a lack of precipitation that intensified wildfire risks and strained its enormous farming industry.

An Update Reveals No Abnormally Dry Areas

Thursday's report from the federal monitoring program confirmed that California in its entirety is without drought or abnormal dryness. This shift was driven by a period of significant storms that replenished key lakes like Oroville and Shasta far beyond their long-term norms.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve always lived in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” noted a local meteorologist.

From Intense Storms to Wet Holidays

Achieving this status involved powerful and fatal winter storms that pummeled the state in the not-too-distant past, resulting in significant overflow, power outages, and tragic losses. Although that weather started to mitigate the drought, they fell short of ending it.

As late as late December, areas like northeastern California were considered unusually parched. Subsequent downpours at the onset of 2026 finally erased those final dry conditions.

The Vital Sierra Snow Remains a Concern

However, hydrologists note that the end of drought status should not be confused with complete water security. Recent measurements of the high-elevation snow show it at only about 70% of the historical norm.

This mountain snow, which accounts for about a third of the state's water as it runs off, is a critical factor for the year ahead. State experts point out that it is premature to determine the outlook for the months ahead.

“The current pattern right now is more rain than snow,” said a California water official. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to increase by the start of April so that we’re closer to average.”

Even as the official status indicates no dryness, attention turns to sustaining this precious water balance throughout the months to come.
