Catherine's Annual Christmas Musical Celebration Spotlights Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey, with guests including members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The large audience will hear a selection of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from actors such as Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Focusing on Compassion and Love

The central message of the event, held in the candle-lit Abbey on the afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.

In the audience are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to support families who have a child with a terminal illness.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often discreetly and without words, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an remarkable change to the circumstances of individuals," wrote Catherine in a letter ahead of the concert.

Carefully Paced Reappearance

The princess has been making her own measured re-emergence to the public eye subsequent to her illness and medical care, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she discussed recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Performance and Potential

Attendees entering the Abbey will enjoy performances from talented youth performers aided by the charitable trust Future Talent, set up with the help of the former royal to broaden opportunities for music lessons.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Pembrokeshire, has been helped by the organisation, with awards contributing to musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "amazing" to be playing at the evening's event.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," the musician remarked. She is now studying at the prestigious music academy, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to develop their musical skills.

A Sisterly Duo

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who plays the euphonium, will likewise attend the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Among the guests will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will include young Saphia Turner, nine, winner of a youth community award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to collect donations for food banks.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been festooned with specially made wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

Taking to the stage will be singer Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a Cornish sea shanty group, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the perfect culmination."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be aired by television on December 24th.
