Gus Atkinson increased the injury concerns plaguing England when he left the playing area early on day two of the Boxing Day Test versus the Australians.
The right-arm seamer felt a problem in his left hamstring post-delivery in his spell during the morning session.
The England team indicated Atkinson felt some "soreness" and would spend time on the sidelines to undergo evaluation "over the next few hours".
The concluding match of the series at the SCG begins on Sunday, 4 January.
The visitors have already lost strike bowlers Mark Wood to a knee injury and another paceman with an abdominal strain on this Ashes tour.
Matthew Fisher was added to the party as cover for Wood.
His form was underwhelming early in the series, taking just three wickets.
He was dropped from the previous Test, before being recalled for the Boxing Day match to fill the void.
Atkinson improved at the MCG, taking two wickets during the host's first knock, before adding 28 with the bat being one of only three English batsmen to reach double figures.
After bowling one over at the end of day one, he resumed on Saturday morning and had nightwatchman Scott Boland caught behind.
However, at the end of the fifth over, he sent down a change of pace to Travis Head and immediately felt at his leg.
Atkinson was recalled for the Melbourne match after being left out the previous Test.
