Over 50 unaccompanied young refugees who went missing not long after arriving the UK and while in the care of government agencies are yet to be found, according to data obtained.

A significant number of the unaccounted minors entered in dinghies or hidden in the rear compartments of lorries and are believed to have been abducted by smugglers. A specific county is commonly the location where they first land.

Government Figures Shows Alarming Numbers

Freedom of information records has documented 345 children vanishing from their area, with 56 of those remaining unaccounted for.

From 2021 and 2023, when two hotels for children functioned combined with hotels in other areas, 132 children vanished from these facilities. Of these, 108 were later found but 24 are still missing.

From 2020 and August 2025, 213 children disappeared from welcome hubs for these minors, with 182 found and 32 remaining vanished.

Ethnic Composition of Unaccounted Youths

In the two scenarios, Albanian children were the largest group to disappear, accounting for half the total from the facilities, 68, and more than a quarter from the care facilities, 65.

The second and third largest origins to have gone missing from both places are individuals from Afghanistan then people from Iran.

"The statistics are alarming. For every statistic is a scared youth who will already have experienced serious rights violations preceding their arrival in the UK seeking safety."

Advocacy representatives highlighted that when supporting children who have broken free after being exploited whilst vanished, they see how their psychological and bodily well-being is permanently harmed by the abuse they experience during this time.

"Even a single minor to go missing represents an complete breakdown of the state to shield the most at-risk and exploited in their care. These numbers are in the multiple hundreds."

Urgent Measures to Resolve the Situation

Experts said greater efforts are required to locate the missing children. "These children did not elect to vanish. These youths should be playing football in the park and preparing for their GCSEs, not working for smuggling networks in situations we know entail being tied up, harmed and exploited, and disciplined by being denied nourishment."

Regulatory Updates and Ongoing Concerns

In December 2023, after a extended legal proceeding involving unaccompanied minor refugees disappearing from all hotels, the procedure of regularly housing children in hotels was deemed improper.

Instead, authorities committed to increase protection for these children by expanding the use of reception centres. Following that legal decision a further 44 children have vanished from such locations, with 10 yet to be found and 34 located.
