Sir Gareth Southgate has stated that he is avoiding a re-entry into football management, pointing out that it would be challenging to recreate the higher calling he felt as head of the Three Lions.

He indicated his aim to channel his attention toward working with the next generation and addressing what he called a dominant downbeat story now prevalent in the country.

Embracing Different Paths Outside of The Sport

Speaking on air, Southgate was asked about talk linking him with vacant management roles in the English football and other leagues.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he answered. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

Commitment to Role Models

Ahead of the publication of his new title, his leadership-focused book, he shared that he is highly enthusiastic about offering guidance for young people, drawing on insights from his time as leader of the England team from 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

Southgate maintains that his experience managing the squad, during which the team evolved from being deeply unpopular to broadly loved, holds wider relevance.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he said. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”

Parenting and Guiding Young People

Drawing on his family life, he observed: “Every parent aims to provide a solid foundation, yet there comes a time when children stop heeding parental advice. I’ve faced this at home, just like others, and I believe this area is critically important.”

He added: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Togetherness Beyond Discord

Southgate insisted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the cultural focus often highlights conflict.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he said. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

Southgate’s upcoming publication, the book Dear England, is expected to present deeper reflections on leadership and public spirit inspired by his distinguished professional journey.
