This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional body horror, but inside Together lies a deep contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of codependency and fully committing to another person, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
